e-mail
- All words beginning with "e-", like e-mail, e-commerce, and e-trade must be lowercase (unless it begins the sentence) and hyphenated.
- Do not pluralize e-mail.
INCORRECT: I read my e-mails in the morning.
CORRECT: I read my e-mail messages in the morning.
- Do not use e-mail as a verb.
INCORRECT: I e-mailed my manager.
CORRECT: I sent an e-mail to my manager.
This word generated the most discussion both in the editorial team meetings and amongst others consulted. There did not appear to be a definite standard. I predict that the trend will change to "email" and that the rules on pluralization and anthimeria (the practice of changing a noun to verb form) will relax since they are used in more informal settings, like conversation.
