Welcome to the Seattle Writergrrls' Style Guide

Seattle Writergrrls is a professional network for women writing and working in current and emerging media. In January 1999, our first Web site debuted. Since then, we have formed a steering committee, launched our Web site redesign, hold monthly meetings, and organize educational events. Our online Zine, Uncapped, showcases both novice and experienced writers.

One of the goals of Uncapped is to provide writers and editors with a venue to publish their work. Many of these people use their articles for samples in their careers. A writing or editing sample needs to be professional and "perfect." Many people have the capabilities to post anything they want to the Internet, and prospective employers know this. That is why it is essential that what is posted to the Uncapped stands apart from anything that could appear "just anywhere."

There are many style guides used in media publication today. While all contain elements that are relative to online publishing, none are all inclusive. Since Writergrrls desires to publish outstanding writing that is meticulously edited and elegantly designed, but also conforms to professional conventions so that the work is considered serious by readers and future employers, this house style guide has been designed.

This style guide is a culmination of research of the traditional style guides used in newspapers, technical publications, software, and other similar online zines. The "best of the best" has been extracted or amended to fit our needs. It also recognizes the fact that the world of online style, like language itself, is constantly evolving; what is a trend now may not be acceptable in six months or a year. New issues will arise. Style issues that generated discussion between list members during the research phase were noted in the style guide. This style guide will be rereleased whenever style issues need to be updated to reflect change in conventions.
